Pirate pulls his wind back immediately as it comes in contact with her earth, a look of horror (an entirely new look) crossing his face. Even as Nyota laughs Pirate is apologizing, flustered that his wind could make the Oracle vanish and appalled that he could forget the effects his element had on earth-horses. Pirate supposes that he has never really come into contact with one; but still, it is no excuse for letting his wind go out and suffocate her, he thinks, remembering how he feels around a powerful fire-horse. Pirate looks down to see her Familiar (so like Hypatia’s, he thinks) has settled between his legs. Pirate smiles and when he looks up again, Nyota has reappeared.
“I’m sorry! I’ll be more careful next time,” Pirate says to her explanation. His wind is held back, clinging close to his skin to prevent any further disappearing acts, and Pirate can then focus on what the Oracle is telling him.
He knows of the shards what anyone can know without ever having been in the presence of a keeper, he supposes. He knows that they are bad – he can feel that when he is in Desreal, or even close to the edge of Solira, and sometimes even in the middle of the night as he lay by the shore. But what higher purpose they seek, he cannot say. Pirate supposes that his knowledge is enough – let the warriors handle any battles that come of it. His job, and that of any other scholar, is to keep the ties of friendship within the Element strong. (Nyota echoes this almost immediately after her thinks it, and Pirate would have smiled had not a strong sense of responsibility settled over him.) Instead, he nods, a bit solemnly for the chestnut stallion.
“Andarin has many scholars,” Pirate comments, a bit wistfully. “An Oracle, three seers, and two apprentices.” He says this aloud mostly for himself; he knows the Polestar can count. “Solira is, I’m afraid, a bit behind, with her two apprentices.”
“We had others, but they left for the desert.” And then Pirate comes to the point of his ramblings. “How can I…how can we two handle everything that the six of you handle? We are not Oracles. Giovanna is newly an apprentice. And I…” Pirate frowns, remembering his conversation with Severus – his probing questions with the true, underlying inquiry: Can you do this?
“What if I’m not able to handle the responsibilities of a lone ambassador in a time of turmoil?”
