His wind wants to shrink away at the coming of her bright element, but Pirate laughs and shakes off the feeling. The breeze that was there clings close to his skin, frightful of her heat, but Pirate enjoys it, because she is his student, and what teacher does not revel at the sight of a successful student? “Kalleis,” he says, and it is a welcoming, warm like the breeze that peers, tentatively, at the fire horse. Pirate does not let his mind reach into hers, but he tastes her presence almost as he would taste grass on his tongue; she tastes of burnt leaves, although he does not know why. Had he known of the shard Pirate would know that she tastes of charred leaves for her element and the earth that is now apart of her in the shard-keeper’s possession of her soul.
Pirate sees, standing before him, the child he has always seen, out of the corner of his eye, playing in Solira; but he knows that she is so much more now. We must all grow; some grow on the outside, like Pirate, while remaining so painfully innocent within. Some grow on the inside, and their maturity is not manifest in their appearance. Pirate does not wish to see Kalleis abandon her innocence; but he does wish for the rest of the world to see her as he sees her: a force to be reckoned with.
He can feel the elemental power pulsing throughout her body; can see it falling in the form of ash and flames to the earth.
“Kalleis,” he says again, after only a slight pause. “I wish to get to know you better than I know you now. But I have a task for you yet.”
“Your task is to make somebody fear you.” And it seems a black thing on the tongue of the windswept Jaeger.
