The Academy had become his home, no other would listen to him while he stood up for the rights of those who perhaps didn’t deserve any. But it was his choice to defend life and try to preserve happiness and integrity that set him apart from the world... Set Xolotl apart from Mab, Alshain, Notte, Aelina, The merry lot of them who would have much rather try to tear the pregnant grulla murderer apart. And to think that Libra and Mab were sisters… Oh it tore through like Mab’s fire across the brilliant Earth! But now Libra’s mania would quell, she would rise again perhaps under Alshain’s violent wing and that was no concern of Xolotl’s.
Hypatia was.
There were no vibrant colors heralding from her foot steps, just the muted spirals of sadness that leaked off the gray mare’s body. Immediately the injured stallion made his way towards the oracle, his muzzle outstretched to run the length of her near white neck, though to him the Oracle could very well have been a bay, or black, or Mab’s sooty grulla… It made no difference to him as his muzzle gave way to his mighty chest resting against her body, his neck draping around the crest of hers in a graceful arch that pulled her tightly to him. Her warmth was comforting, his Earthen homeopathy hopefully the same as he hushed her with a rasping breath. He’d heal eventually, his wounds merely physical as it was used to being ignored and seen through, but her soul hurt… And he could feel it.
“I wouldn’t dream of it.”
He whispered through parched lips, his own body sullen and quiet, far from happy or gleeful, far from the hopeful soul he’d been when he’d met her, this Oracle, this empathic, intuitive creature that had become his hope. “I wouldn’t want to see the world through any eyes but yours, Hypatia. You are a Queen. You’ve given me hope and shown me where I belong.” Of course the question was ‘How? Where?’ but such things would only be answered in time. For now he was content in standing where he was holding onto the warm, torn body of the mare he’d come to honor. “Someday the Jaegers will unite and learn, they’ve not given an example by which to draw from. Thrown into discord by Hawthorne’s murder followed by the death of their beloved Seaglimmer, and then their King abandoning them… I understand why they did what they did and said what they said to Libra when she tried to rally them. But it will be ok, Hypatia… It will be ok and I will be there to help you if you ask of me to do so. Just be prepared, they tend to not see me as much as I see them.”
But his hold shifted on her, it moved as he did to rest his whole great body alongside hers, his muzzle questing across her cheek to her muzzle until his own cheek and long lashes rested beside her own. His head was so much bigger then hers, and for now he understood the delicate beauty hidden beneath such a strong façade… And he smiled. “Don’t give up Hypatia, please don’t give up… I care not for the trade, I will find another way to be with you, all is not lost.” His words were soft, a feathery whisper against her neck and he drew in but shallow breaths to cushion his broken ribs. Hesitantly he broke away from her and took but a handful of steps backwards before his great head dropped in a bow, one leg extended but nothing as cheesy as a full to the ground bow… No, he gave to Hypatia his great allegiance. He signed to her his life, his truth, his dignity. “I will not fail you as you will not fail me, my Queen.”
And that would be the way the world looked until the Jaeger Queen would have no more of him or the sun finally set to steal from him his final breath. And as Xolotl lifted his head to step toward Hypatia as her personal Cardinal, her confidant, her friend… And he, that night, began to fall in love with the humble creature he called a friend and Queen.
