for even to think wrongly
is better than not to think at all."
They are kindred spirits.
There stands a cripple and an Oracle, and they are alike. He is blind, much as Hypatia can be. They are both alone, searching for something beyond themselves, reaching out in the Darkness. And the Darkness is what Hypatia fears most of all. Perhaps it is the true reason she chose Fire: not because of its passion, but because of its blinding light. Because with it, she will never be blind. She will always See.
She stands completely still, not even her Fire moving around her body as it usually does. It has been more in control since she became an Oracle, and since the mishap with the Reef and Range. She has more to focus on, being an Elder, and a leader. And perhaps, because of Kail. He sits beside her, looking up at the blind creature before him, wondering just what this thing is.
Hush, Kail. That is a student, his name is Xolotl.
Kail’s mind greedily envelops hers. It attempts the name, plays around with it in his mind. His lips open into a sloppily smile. Hypatia cannot help but smile back herself. The stallion speaks then, and Hypatia looks at him. He cannot see her, and at the moment, he even Hear her. Soon he will be able to though. He will Hear the entirety of the world, and it may overcome him. It overcame her. But she Hears him. In the clearness of his mind, the simple movements, she Sees the world in a different way.
It is a world of sounds and smells. There are birds, and there is the Earth groaning. And though her Fire merely swirls about in her head and in her eyes, she can Hear the crackling of its embers, and feel the heat that it gives off. “Then I wish upon myself your plague.” There is kindness, softness to her voice. It is newly acquired, and somewhat apologetic. Hypatia makes sure not to let the lonliness of herself slip into her voice. Kail feels it, and nudges closer to his familiar.
“We have a few Rogue scholars. You are always welcome here. And I am glad to be teaching you.” Sincerity. Warmth. Welcome. That is what Hypatia shows. She comes closer to him, and breathes him in. Her body is warm and inviting as it presses closer. “Until you can See yourself,” She smiles, and she makes her first promise. “I will see for you. I will be your eyes until you can open them yourself.”
She moves then, her body close to his, Hearing the world through the soft touch of his mind, and seeing for herself. If she could open the door of his mind, she could briefly let him see for himself. Mind touches are rare things. “I am not unfortunate. Now tell me a story, Xolotl. So I may begin to teach you how to see and how to read.”
