Very, very interesting. I absolutely enjoyed reading these quests and the detail and creativity each of you put into them. I also realized that there were some clues in the riddle that were far too ambiguous, as neither of you completed it correctly - that does not mean you did not complete the quest to satisfaction, however. As the Shard defines it:
"Find me, scholars who seek;
For I lie beneath ribbons of gold.
But you know better than to start at the end,
You must start where predators roam."*
"Listen not to Gargouille
For he would lead you astray.
Instead seek the path where all colors collide,
And meet those you see everyday."**
"But longer still, you must walk,
Where glory is won without sword.
The conditions there may be seldom ideal
But that's comfort you cannot afford."***
"Finally, scholars who seek!
Slip beneath rock that could fall.
They say the grass here grows from their blood
And colors the uneven walls."****
"I made ocean and flame equal.
But I am only one of these."*****
*I was very interested to read both your interpretations that this was the Lightning shard. But golden can relate to two elements; I will explain this in the last clue. The correct first location was WOLFRANGE - of the two mascots, the Wolves are the only animals that actually kill their prey. Jaegers are scavengers; bullies who taunt and shove at other birds and steal their meal.
**The second location was CABAL GLADE. The reference to Gargouille is a warning NOT to go the the Reef (Gargouille is a water monster) but to go where 'all colors (horse) collide' and you can 'meet those you see daily' -- the only place this happens is at the Glade.
***The third location was BLITZKRIEG. My clue was purposefully misleading here, to see if you'd pick up on both parts. This clue is meant to be taken quite literally: horses fight without swords. The 'less than ideal' conditions refers to the unstable weather - the Krieg is the only place with defined weather conditions. I can see why you would both think Ersatz though!
****The last location was SUPRAYA, which you both understood correctly.
*****The specific location was within the rock wall, which you both got correctly based on the shard's hint to check the rocks. However, the last part refers to the Shard's alignment. Arrakis (ocean) and Dorian (fire) fought the first gold here - the shard gives itself credit for them becoming equal (both Golds). But the shard says it is "one of these", so it must be fire or water. The shard is in fact Fire, as hinted at in the first paragraph about being under golden 'grass' - yellow is a color associated with fire and not water. Very, very creative the way you defined this as leaning toward lightning; I can completely see why you would think that.
The Elementals are pleased with your thoughtful journey through the four locations; that you both arrived at the correct end location was the only vital piece. However, they must choose between you now, as neither of you followed the exact path they intended.
NYOTA: You chose to begin your journey at the Reef, thinking of Jaegers as birds of prey. You then moved on to the Range, because there, you see those you meet everyday. Next you moved to Ersatz, where you thought of those who gleaned glory without the use of violence - a land shrouded in darkness and made of lies. Finally to Supraya, where the bloody walls light your way to the shard's location. You thought it to be Lightning, for water is weak to it, and it can spark flame. Though expertly crafted, you only got 1 of the 5 clues correct.
KALE: You began correctly in Wolfrange, and followed the voices to Cabal as they guided you. You were led astray to Ersatz just as Nyota, but arrived in Supraya beneath the correct pretenses. But you too thought to be finding the shard of Lightning; and so you got 3 out of 5 correct. You also finished the Quest first.
Really, really excellent job, both of you. I hope you will keep your Quest posts for your own reference and for bragging rights, because they are exceptionally vivid. But the Elementals have chosen:
"Kale," it whispers, a stone born from fire and colored like ash—its flames are black in its weakness, but there is a seductive shimmer to it all the same.
"Brother. Keeper."
And the voice of It is intoxicatingly wicked; like the hiss of a snake or the sound of nails on glass. The wolf King's presence makes it glow, if only faintly, feeding from the elemental power he shared with it.
"Heal me!"
There is a shattering noise and the shard becomes opaque; sharing for a brief moment the blood-like walls as it gleams blinding crimson. And then it is within Kale, a presence like a shadow, leaving only a single scar on his chest, scaled like a burn.
THE FIRE SHARD HAS CHOSEN KALE AS ITS KEEPER.
BOTH KALE AND NYOTA SHALL BE BLESSED WITH THE POWERS AND STATUS OF SEER FOR THEIR EXCELLENCE IN THIS MATTER.
THE ELEMENTALS HAVE AUTOMATICALLY NOMINATED THEM AS THE FIRST TWO ELDERS OF THE COUNCIL, INDISPUTABLE UNTIL OTHERS JOIN THEIR RANK.
Congrats!!!
